Hardware and software

Understand how hardware and software depend on each other to receive input, process data, store information, and produce output.

Two parts of a computer system#

Hardware is the physical equipment that makes up or connects to a computer. A processor, keyboard, screen, and storage drive are hardware because they are physical devices.

Software is the set of programs and instructions that a computer follows. A web browser, writing program, and operating system are software.

Hardware without software has no instructions for performing useful tasks. Software without compatible hardware has nothing on which to run.

Common hardware groups#

Processing hardware

The central processing unit, or CPU, carries out instructions and coordinates many operations. Other specialised processors may handle graphics or particular workloads.

Memory and storage

Main memory holds data and instructions that are actively being used. Storage devices retain files and programs for later use.

Input and output devices

Input devices send data or commands into a computer. Output devices present the results of processing.

Types of software#

System software

System software manages hardware and provides a platform for other programs. Operating systems, device drivers, and many utility programs belong to this group.

Application software

Application software helps a user complete a task. Examples include spreadsheets, media players, web browsers, and drawing programs.

How they work together#

Consider typing a document:

  1. The keyboard sends input to the computer.
  2. The operating system and device driver make the input available to the writing application.
  3. The processor executes instructions from those programs.
  4. Main memory holds the active document and program data.
  5. The screen displays the result.
  6. A storage device keeps the saved file.

Every step combines physical devices with program instructions.

Common mistakes#

Treating every visible item as hardware

An icon displayed on a screen is not hardware. The screen is hardware; the icon is a visual element produced by software.

Calling data software

A photo or document is data. A program that opens or edits the file is software. Both may be stored on the same device, but they serve different roles.

Assuming hardware is useful by itself

A new printer still needs compatible software, such as a driver, before the computer can communicate with it correctly.

A classification check#

Ask whether the item is a physical device, a program that provides instructions, or data handled by a program. This three-way check prevents many basic classification errors.

Key points

  • Hardware is the physical equipment in or connected to a computer system.
  • Software is the collection of programs and instructions that hardware executes.
  • System software manages the computer while application software supports user tasks.
  • Most computer activities require hardware and software to work together.
